HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE . . . Clocktower Merchants in Lincoln are working with the People’s City Mission to prepare 2,000 holiday meals. They will match all food donations, which are being accepted until December 15, 2008. Non-perishable items needed include instant mashed potatoes, stuffing, cans of cranberry, cans of pumpkin, pie crust (boxes, packages), and canned vegetables. Drop off items at Edward Jones, Lott Chiropractic, or Fernando’s Salon in the 70th & A Street Clocktower Shopping Center.

WAUBONSIE STATE PARK DAY HIKE . . . Waubonsie State Park is located in the southwest corner of Iowa, about an hour south of Omaha. To carpool for a day hike on Saturday, December 6, 2008, meet in the northeast corner of the SuperTarget parking lot, Papillion, Nebraska, on the west side of 84th Street about 1/2 mile south of Giles, at 8:00am. OPEN HOUSE AT SPRING CREEK PRAIRIE . . . The public is invited to a Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center Open House from 1:00 to 5:00pm, Sunday, December 7, 2008. The Lancaster County Commissioners final hearing to address a request from Spring Creek Prairie Audubon for closure of a minimum maintenance dirt road dividing habitat for native plants and animals will be Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 9:30am at the County-City Building, 555 South 10th Street, Lincoln. Greens and conservationists are urged to attend this hearing in supportof closing for the sake of preservation. CD 1 GREEN PARTY CHAPTER MEETING . . . Chapter 1 Greens will meet Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 7:00pm, at the home of Steve Larrick, US Senate candidate in the November 4 election, 920 South 8th Street, Lincoln. The future of Nebraska Green Party will be discussed. Without a 5% vote in a statewide election, to continue, NGP will need to petition the Secretary of State for a new political party ballot line in the next election cycle.

NEW LINCOLN GREEN DRINKS . . . There are now Green Drinks Chapters in 426 cities worldwide. Lincoln’s informal self-organizing network of Green Movement supporters will meet Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 5:00pm to close, at Fireworks Restaurant, 5750 South 86th Drive (SE corner 84th & Old Cheney). Meet in the boardroom near the back of the restaurant. There are happy hour specials on food and drink until 6:00pm. All are welcome.

Drop off burned-out compact fluorescent lamps at Ace Hardward stores in Lincoln, now through November 30, 2008. A 60 cent recycling fee per bulb will be offset by a 60 cent coupon toward the purchase of a new CFL. FROM SAFE HAVEN TO SAFE HARBOR . . . The Nebraska Family Support Network will hold a Safe Harbor Rally on the north steps of the Capitol Building in Lincoln at 1:00pm, Monday, November 17, 2008. What the Safe Haven Law has uncovered is that many Nebraska families are in crisis. The challenges these families face will not go away with the repeal of Safe Haven legislation. Your voice counts. Make a statement in support of families with special needs children by attending this rally. Local and national media will be present.

“END OF BUSH PARTY” . . . Monday, November 17, 2008, there will be a party at Zen’s Lounge, 122 North 11th Street, Lincoln, 7:00pm, to celebrate the end of the Bush era, and new possibilities for change in this country. “THE GREEN BOOK” WRITER AT DOANE . . . Monday, November 10, 2008, 7:00pm at Doane College Heckman Auditorium, columnist and New York Times writer Thomas Kostigen will speak on how an individual’s everyday actions can affect the environment. Co-author of “The Green Book: The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time,” Kostigen’s new book is “You Are Here: The Surprising Link Between What We Do and What That Does to the Planet.”

STATE’S FIRST WIND ENERGY CONFERENCE . . . Nebraska’s first Wind Energy Conference is Tuesday and Wednesday, November 11 and 12, 2008 in Kearney at the Holiday Inn Convention Center.  Hosted by the Nebraska Wind Working Group and the Nebraska Energy Office, the Conference will feature national wind experts, industry exhibits, and sessions on small wind turbines, land issues, and financing. “BATTLE FOR WHITECLAY” . . . Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 7:00pm, there will be a special showing of Mark Vasina’s original documentary about Whiteclay, “Battle for Whiteclay,” in the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom at UN-O. After the screening, Vasina, the film’s producer, and Frank LaMere, Native American activist, will speak with the audience. The event is free and open to the public. PEACE ACTIVISTS GO TO ARRAIGNMENT . . . Eight peace activists were arrested at a 30-minute Omaha Die-In October 8, 2008 outside the Qwest Center, including 90 year old Nebraska Icon of Peace Peg Gallagher. The demonstration symbolized the thousands of people who die each year at the hands of rampant global militarization promoted by STRATCOM. The Die-In was meant to “expose the lie of legitimacy given by the City of Omaha and the Qwest Convention Center to the 2008 Strategic Space and Defense Conference” weapons bazaar. The event was part of Keep Space for Peace Week, International Days of Protest to Stop the Militarization of Space. Gallagher and the other Omaha activists will be arraigned Wednesday November 12, 2008, 1:30pm, at the Douglas County Court, Courtroom Number 27, 18th and Farnam Street, Omaha.  If they plead guilty or no contest, they may be sentenced after a short hearing.  If they plead not guilty, the judge will set a trial date.  Supporters are invited to attend the arraignment in solidarity.

HAWKWATCH FIELD TRIP . . . The Annual HawkWatch Eagle Migration Festival begins at 1:00pm, Sunday, November 16, 2008, 20 minutes north of Omaha at Hitchcock Nature Center. Thousands of raptors migrate south across the Missouri River Valley “hawk highway” each year. A carpool from Lincoln will meet at the Wachiska Audubon office, 4547 Calvert Street, at 9:00am, to meet for the Hawkwatch at 10:30. We need to invest in research that reduces our dependence on oil in food production and find ways to provide more employment opportunities producing food and energy in rural America. SPRING CREEK PRAIRIE HIKE . . . There will be an evening prairie sunset hike Saturday, October 11, 2008, 6:30 to 8:30pm beginning from the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center. The Center is located 20 minutes southwest of Lincoln–follow SW 98th Street south out of Denton for three miles. COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY . . . The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners is seeking community members to serve on the County Extension Board for 3-year terms beginning January, 2009. The Extension Board represents and assists UN-L Extension staff with Agricultural
Profitability and Sustainability and issues concerning Children, 4-H, Youth and Families, Food Safety, Health and Wellness, Water Quality and the Environment.
