“In the face of rapidly escalating oil prices, we need to strengthen the family farm and local food systems. We need to invest in research that reduces our dependence on oil in food production and find ways to provide more employment opportunities producing food and energy in rural America. We need to invest heavily in the development of renewable energy from wind, solar, geothermal, and ethanol production from alternative sources like cellulose and algae. “BATTLE FOR WHITECLAY” . . . Wednesday November 5, 2008, 6:00pm, there will be a special premiere showing of Mark Vasina’s original documentary about Whiteclay, “Battle for Whiteclay,” at the Un-L City Campus Union Auditorium, 15th & R Streets in Lincoln. After the screening, Vasina, the film’s producer, and Frank LaMere, Native American activist, will speak with the audience. The event is free and open to the public. LOWER PLATTE RIVER SUMMIT . . . The second biennial Lower Platte River Summit focusing on management and protection of the Platte River Basin will be Thursday, November 6, 2008, at Camp Calvin Crest near Fremont, Nebraska. CLIMATE CHANGE SYMPOSIUM . . . “National Climate Change Legislation and Opportunities for Nebraska” is the theme of a symposium at the UN-L City Campus Student Union Auditorium, 1400 R Street, Lincoln, from 1:30 to 5:00pm on Thursday, November 6, 2008. Featured speakers will be David Hawkins, director of climate programs for the Natural Resources Defense Council, and John McClure, vice president and general counsel for the Nebraska Public Power District. RECYCLE CFLs NOW THROUGH NOVEMBER 30 . . . WasteCap Nebraska is coordinating a pilot recycling program for individuals and businesses. STATE’S FIRST WIND ENERGY CONFERENCE . . . Nebraska’s first Wind Energy Conference is November 11 and 12, 2008 in Kearney at the Holiday Inn Convention Center. Hosted by the Nebraska Wind Working Group and the Nebraska Energy Office, the Conference will feature nationally known wind experts, industry exhibits, and sessions on small wind turbines, land issues, and financing. THE DEATH PENALTY IN NEBRASKA: WHERE TO GO FROM HERE . . . Nebraskans Against the Death Penalty Board Chair Amy Miller will speak at a Forum in preparation for the 2009 legislative session at 11:30am, Sunday, November 9, 2008, at the Unitarian Church of Lincoln, 6400 A Street. Weekly Monday Vigils against the state policy of capital punishment are held in front of the governor’s mansion, 1425 H Street, Lincoln. Everyone is welcome to join the vigil from noon to 1:00pm.
