Take action on net neutrality

From callthefcc.com:

There’s some great news and some terrible news: President Obama has answered our calls, and just made a strong statement urging the FCC to adopt real Net Neutrality rules under “Title II reclassification” — the strongest authority possible.

But FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is dug in: He’s trying to delay and still considering passing rules weaker than what we and Obama want — but are great for the cable companies for which Wheeler used to lobby.

What can you do? Call the FCC, sign the petition, or join a protest.

Citizens Climate Lobby in Omaha Nov. 1

From Frances Mendenhall via Progressive Omaha:

The Citizens Climate Lobby meets Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11:45 a.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, 3647 Lafayette Avenue. The Climate Lobby’s goal is to get a tax on carbon that is entirely returned to households. “Tax Carbon, Pay People,” is the shorthand way to say it. We are starting to make a difference, but we need you to help make this happen. Also useful, there are still 12 days to buy a TAX CARBON shirt, the shirt that fights climate change. This shirt spreads our message, and its price supports our work. Get the shirt.

Call Your Members of Congress

It appears the march toward war is on once again. NOW is the time to call your U.S. Senators and Representatives. Let them know:

1. ISIS and the disintegration of Iraq and Syria are political and social issues that cannot be solved militarily.

2. Our military interventions in the region have already cost us much and gained us little.

3. The decision to go to war must be made democratically; we cannot re-constitute the rationale of a 13-year-old Act of Congress that — even back then — irresponsibly granted the Executive Branch far-reaching, unchecked war-making powers.

4. There is an alternative approach: Build an international coalition to starve violent militants of money and arms. End the violence, rather than perpetuating it.

Call Congress by using this special number: 1-855-68 NO WAR (1-855-686-6927). This number will connect you with the Capitol Switchboard operator. Ask for your Representative or Senator’s office. Don’t be discouraged — they will listen. If we all call, they will have to listen.

From BOLD Nebraska:

On Friday, Sept. 5, the Nebraska Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Thompson v. Heineman, the case pitting three Nebraska landowners fighting to protect their land from eminent domain and TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline, against an unconstitutional law passed by the Nebraska legislature fast-tracking the pipeline route approval process.

The hearing will take place at 9 a.m. at the Nebraska Supreme Court, located inside the State Capitol building in Lincoln.

Want to attend the hearing, watch it broadcast live, or go to the concert rally later that day? Get all the info from BOLD Nebraska.

Petition: End subsidies for mega-farms

From the Center for Rural Affairs:

In the final hours of debate on the 2014 Farm Bill, Congress stripped the popular bi-partisan reform that would have tightened what it means to be “actively engaged” in farming. This definition is important, because without it, mega-farmers use this as a loophole to multiply their payments for every acre they add to their operation. Instead of acting, Congress punted the issue to the administration. The time has come for the Obama Administration to fulfill their 2007 campaign pledge and close the loopholes mega-farms use to get around farm program payment limits.

Step forward by adding your voice today! President Obama and Vice President Biden need to deliver on the promise they made to Iowa farmers when working for their vote in 2007.

Sign the petition.
