{"id":1925,"date":"2017-06-19T14:02:17","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T19:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nebraskagreens.org\/wordpress\/?p=1925"},"modified":"2017-06-19T14:02:17","modified_gmt":"2017-06-19T19:02:17","slug":"coal-faces-competition-even-in-nebraska","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nebraskagreens.org\/wordpress\/2017\/06\/19\/coal-faces-competition-even-in-nebraska\/","title":{"rendered":"Coal faces competition, even in Nebraska"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omaha.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omaha World-Herald<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s removal of the United States from the Paris Agreement climate plan won\u2019t provide a lifeline to the ailing coal industry \u2014 even in a state like Nebraska that burns a lot of it.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities, railroads and other users and haulers of the black stuff say that when it comes to the move away from coal, the train has already left the station.<\/p>\n<p>Even in Nebraska, the only state that increased its reliance on coal to produce power in the 10-year period between 2006 and 2016, a closer look at electricity-generating data shows a different pattern more recently: Since 2013, coal\u2019s share of the market has actually fallen.<\/p>\n<p>So while Nebraska utilities still gobble up coal to produce power, they\u2019re using a more varied mix of sources to make electricity \u2014 bringing wind, solar and natural gas into the picture.
